中胸側板の側面域に斜めに走る溝があることから同亜科他属から区別される. 採集地が西表島であることから本種名を適用した. 大腮基部のしわはこの撮影角度からは判別できない.
学名の表記は日本産アリ類図鑑(寺山ら, 2014)に準拠した.

トゲズネハリアリの美しい標本写真を撮影しました. 本種は複眼が極めて少なく, 殆ど盲目なアリであると思われます.
腹柄節下部突起の形状から同属他種と区別できる. 中脚脛節の剛毛と, 非常に小さな複眼が特徴.
ワーカーとは異なり, 複眼が発達している.
